Vanabode Camp, Travel And Live Forever On $20 A Day

This is one of those things that I seriously can’t believe I did, and it goes to show that even people who have been involved in the points and miles hobby for years can still make silly, silly mistakes that cost real money and real points.

Many credit cards now come with some sort of annual travel credit. Depending on the card, the credit can sometimes be used on any type of travel purchase, sometimes only on specific airline purchases, sometimes you need to do something ahead of time to activate the credit, and sometimes you don’t.

In the case of American Express cards, you must activate the credit ahead of time by selecting the airline your credit will be valid for incidental fees on. This is a super easy thing to do by logging into your American Express account, heading to the travel benefits section, and selecting your airline from a drop-down menu.

I generally do this as soon as I get a new American Express credit card with the credit on it because why wait? It doesn’t mean that I use my credit right away, because it depends on what I am planning to do with my credit, but I generally have a good idea of what airline I want to use the credit with right away.

Well, with my recent Hilton Aspire Card from American Express card, I forgot to select my airline. At the end of the year I used up my credits on American Airlines, or so I thought, but since I had never chosen my airline, I did not get the reimbursement. I chatted with American Express to see if they would cut me a break for being a loyal cardmember but didn’t get very far. I’m not totally resigned to letting it go just yet, but it would have been a lot easier if I had just remembered to select my airline in the first place!

Have you ever lost out on money or points for forgetting to do something simple like selecting which airline you wanted to use your credit at?
