I Just Signed Up for the Delta Platinum Card, Here’s Why [Expired]

Vanabode Camp, Travel And Live Forever On $20 A Day

In late 2018, I signed up for the Delta Gold Amexs. There are a few reasons I decided to finally start accruing Delta SkyMiles, but I was mostly enticed by a direct offer I received in the mail. With my mailer, I was able to sign up and earn 75,000 SkyMiles — 50,000 after spending $2,000 within three months of account opening and another 25,000 miles after spending an additional $1,000 within six months. My offer also came with a $200 statement credit if I spent $1,000 on Delta purchases within six months, and I was able to take advantage right away.

Since then, I signed up for the Delta Platinum Amex as well. I just received the card in the mail plan to start using it in the next week.

You may be wondering why I would sign up for this card after just getting the Delta Gold Amex a few months ago. If so, here’s why:

  • Same big signup bonus: The main reason I signed up for the Delta Platinum Amex was to score the same 75k bonus I got on the Gold version with the same spending requirement and statement credit offer. My mail offer from Delta included a link I could access to see which offers I qualified for, but you can log into your account to see if you’re eligible here.
  • You can earn the bonus on each card once per lifetime: American Express does have a very punishing limit on their signup bonuses. Basically, you can earn the bonus on each of their unique products once per lifetime and that’s it. Since the Delta Gold Amex is a different product than the Delta Platinum Amex, you can earn the signup bonus on both.
  • Score a domestic companion ticket: While the Delta Platinum Amex does have a $195 annual fee, you do qualify for a domestic companion ticket when you renew your card. Per the terms and conditions, the “Companion Certificate is valid for one round-trip Main Cabin Companion ticket with the payment of applicable taxes and fees detailed below and the purchase of certain adult round-trip fares on published routings within the 48 contiguous United States.” I could see myself using this perk in the future.

The Bottom Line

There are other benefits that come with the Delta Platinum Amex that overlap with the Delta Gold Amex. For example, you get priority boarding with a free checked bag — both perks that I like receiving for free. Since the Delta Gold Amex already offers these benefits, however, I didn’t really consider them in my decision.

Either way, the Delta Platinum Amex is a solid deal if you can score a big signup bonus. The 75K offers that are floating around are some of the highest that we’ve seen, which provides an incentive to sign up now if you qualify rather than later. Since you can only earn each bonus once, you have to make it count.

Do you have the Delta Platinum Amex? Why or why not?
